English: The Antonine Wall, from the Roman fort at Rough Castle Rough Castle is the site of a fort on the Antonine Wall. The fort contained barracks, a granary, and the commanding officer's house. It also had an annexe which contained the regimental bath-house.
The ditch of the Antonine Wall can be seen running from the lower right corner of the image, and heading into the distance; to its left is the Wall; to its right, the upcast mound associated with the ditch. At this spot, the Wall, the ditch, and the mound are all interrupted by the course of a little stream, the Rowantree Burn. The fort itself lies just behind and to the left of the photographer's position. The Antonine Wall was granted World Heritage Site status in 2008. |
